Pear and Nut Pie

Pear and Nut Pie

It’s been a while since I prepared something that has fruit in it and I found it once time again to do that, as a treat for the weekend. The whole week I asked myself what kind of fruit I was going to use. Something with apple ? Mwah for me this seemed a little too predictable. Pears on the other hand, sounded like a good idea to me to use for a change. In fact, a pear is an ideal kind of fruit to use in pastry and also it’s been months since the last time I’ve prepared something with pears in it (see my Chocolate Pear Cake).

Name one classic combination in which pears are involved and immediately nuts come up. Both fruits go together perfectly; the full juicy and sweet taste of pears and the destinctive delicate earthy flavor of nuts. In addition, the pears become soft once baked in the oven and to that the crunchy nuts provide an excellent balance. Although by combining both ingredients, the final taste of the cake can be called heavenly, I added a personal touch to it, namely chunks of dark chocolate which I’ve mixed in the dough. While baking in the oven, the chocolate slightly melts and paves its way through the batter, making the pie extra moist. Once cooled, the chocolate solidifies back into chunky pieces which in turn provide an extra bite that’s unprecedented.

Maybe you’re wondering where and how I gained the inspiration for preparing this pie? Actually, this came up during my weekly trip to the farmers market. Both the pears and nuts were on sale and therefor my choice was quickly made. In other words; whenever you’re without inspiration again about what to prepare for whatever occasion, I want to recommend you very much to pay a visit to a farmers market in your neighborhood sometime (in case you don’t do that already of course). I’m pretty sure you’ll pick up great ideas overthere and you’ll return home with packed bags, with all kinds of stuff in them, just like me.
